Ignite Scripture Verses
Matthew 5: 15-16 (NASB)
“…nor does anyone
light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light
shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your father who is in heaven.”
Scripture Explanation
This verse makes it clear that we are to be a light and a witness to all people.
Jesus asked a question in verse 15, “does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket?” The obvious answer is no! No one does that. It’s like turning on a flashlight at night and sticking
it under your bed when you need it outside. Jesus was trying to say that we need to shine where people will see us.
There is something in verse 15
that is very important. Jesus said that a lamp has to be lit. This lighting of the lamp is an action word—verb. The
Greek New Testament word for this lighting action is kaio (kah-yo). This action word literally means to set on fire, burn,
or kindle. It is different than “light” mentioned in verse 16—it’s the Greek word phos (foce). That
is the actual thing, noun, being produced from the initial setting on fire. Another way of
translating kaio is IGNITE. The Dictionary definition of Ignite is the same: to set on fire, kindle, to heat intensely,
or begin to burn. When we read the text with this understanding Jesus is saying that we have to be set on fire (Ignite) to
shine before men.
